School Foundational Literacy Plan (2025–2026)

This plan outlines how Sorrento Primary supports student literacy development in grades K–3.


Literacy Goal

By May 2026, the percentage of students in grades K–3 meeting the DIBELS composite benchmark will increase from 74% to 78%.


Daily Literacy Instruction

  • Students in grades K–3 receive a minimum of 120 minutes of literacy instruction daily
  • Instruction includes:
    • Word recognition skills
    • Language comprehension skills
  • All students participate in Tier 1 core instruction

Intervention Time

  • At least 30 minutes daily is dedicated to literacy intervention
  • Students below grade level receive targeted support
  • Students on grade level participate in skill reinforcement

Instructional Materials

The school uses the following curriculum and resources:

  • Amplify CKLA Skills (Grades K–3)
  • Louisiana Guidebooks (Grades K–3)

Literacy Interventions & Support

Students identified below grade level receive:

  • Daily small group instruction (minimum 30 minutes)
  • Targeted instruction based on skill needs
  • Use of intervention programs such as:
    • BURST
    • CKLA intervention materials
  • Opportunities for guided and independent practice
  • Feedback from teachers
  • Progress monitoring every two weeks

Teacher Professional Development

Teachers in grades K–3:

  • Complete or are enrolled in 60 hours of literacy training
  • Participate in training on:
    • Science of Reading
    • CKLA curriculum implementation
    • Louisiana Guidebooks
    • Literacy assessments and data analysis

Family Engagement in Literacy

Families are actively involved in student literacy through:

Communication

  • Updates shared at least three times per year, including:
    • Literacy screener results
    • Student progress
    • Instruction and interventions
    • Ways to support learning at home
  • Meetings offered:
    • In-person
    • Virtual
    • Written communication options

Family Literacy Support Opportunities

  • Family Support Toolkit (digital and print resources)
  • Monthly newsletters with literacy activities
  • School social media updates
  • Annual Family Literacy Night with:
    • Read-alouds
    • Literacy games
    • Take-home resources
  • Weekly library lessons aligned to literacy standards
